What a funny name for a city. The first picture is of the Rio Grande and the second one is Main Street in Truth or Consequences, NM.

The city changed its name from Hot Springs to Truth or Consequences in 1950. Ralph Edwards, the host of a radio quiz show for NBC, said that he would air his program from the first city that renamed itself after his show. Hot Springs, NM won. For the next fifty years, Edwards came to the city every first weekend in May.

The town held parades, a beauty contest and other fun things.

There are a lot of spas in T or C, (that's what we New Mexicans call it), because of the hot springs.

Besides soaking in a hot spring and getting a massage, you can go fishing and camp along the Rio Grande. You can mountain bike, wind surf or hike the Cibola National Forest. You can drive through ghost towns or military fort ruins.

How to Get rid of Goatheads -Stickers

Goatheads- I never heard this word until I moved to New Mexico. In Jersey we just call them stickers. But out here, they do look like little goat's head. And you know when you've stepped on one. OUCH! They will even go through some soles of shoes.
Even after you remove it, there's a lingering feeling that it's still there. I hate those things. If your not careful you can bring them in the house and then your pets step on them. (My poor dog).
I have learned to scrape my shoes before coming in the house or, take them off.
I found the best way to get rid of them is to pull them with gloves on your hands, by the root, before they get the little stickers on them. They pull up very easy if you get them before they flower. Once you pull them out they shouldn't come back. It takes time if you have a lot of them. If it rains, they will spread.
Talking with my neighbors and people who have lived here a long time, this is the only way to get rid of them.

I couldn't believe this when I read it in AARP's magazine. Scammers prey on grieving families.

When people are most vulnerable, only a few days after the loss of a loved one, the telephone rings.

The scammers tell you that your dearly depated has left a huge debt, and if it's not paid immediately, they will start collection proceedings.

Now, not being in your normal state of mind, you may give them personal information, credit card numbers, etc., just to hurry and be rid of it. And this is what they are counting on.

How To Protect Yourself

1. If you are not a cosigner with the deceased, you are under NO obligation to pay their debt. Even if you are a family member.

2. If your not sure about it, have the person calling furnish proof of the debt. Make sure they put in writing, who is owed, how much, the reason, when the debt was acquired and why are you being contacted.

3. Make sure they are legitimate by contacting the Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org/.

Please, never give out your bank account numbers or credit card numbers over the phone.

Cash for Gold?

I have seen so many commercials asking people to send in their gold jewelry for cash, that it makes me wonder. If so many companies are willing to pay cash for it, maybe I should keep it. I mean, I don't know who these people are. I would rather do business in person. I also worry about the Post Office employees. They know by the envelope what's inside. What if someone just opens it and takes it? Then I have nothing. What do they know that I don't? Will paper money be useless in the future? Could be, the way the economy is. I am like a lot of people, not rich, need money, but selling my gold is very hard to do. It's hard to let go of. Maybe I could use it to barter with if things get worse.

But, if you go this way, please have your gold weighed so you know how much your sending in. An average return is 85%. Also, ask for a detailed report on the items you sent.

A lot of people find themselves in a situation where they want to find or identify a person from an email address. That can be hard to do, especially if they are not too familiar with computers.
It amazes me how people can hide their identity. They really take extreme measures so no one knows who they are. There are a lot of mean people out ther in cyper-space.
There is something called a Reverse E-Mail Search. I have no idea how to do this, nor do I have the time. But I know someone who does.
If you are being harrassed by someone through e-mail and want to know who they are, you can hire a private detective to find out for you. This works for me because it's trustworthy. I don't want to be the one who falsley accuses the wrong person.

Protect Your Heart

You know it's coming. SNOW! Here are some tips in protecting your heart this winter.

Warm up by doing light stretching for five minutes. When you start shoveling, start out with small shovelfuls and work up from there. Use a plastic shovel and spray WD-40 on the blade so the snow won't stick.

Dress in layers so when you heat up you can start removing outer clothing. Too much heat causes your heart to beat faster. Keep your heart rate in a safe range.

Try not to lift the snow, push it instead. Do not twist to throw the snow to the side or over your shoulder.

Pace yourself by taking frequent breaks until your breathing comes back to normal. Know when to stop. If you have any discomfort it's time to stop.

Pay someone to shovel for you. (My favorite)
Don't eat a heavy meal before shoveling and no alcohol.
If you have chest pain, stop immediately and call 911.
If you are an inactive person, do not shovel snow.

Where Does Identity Theft Happen?

Direct Theft - Identity thieves will steal your purse or wallet. Then they use your ATM or Credit Cards. Any personal information they find is a windfall.

Mail - Your mail is very easy to steal. Don't think it's safe even if your mailbox is next to your front door. If they get their hands on your bank or credit card statements, you are in trouble. All the information they need is on your statements. They even go so far as to fill out a change of address form in your name, so they receive your mail.

ATMs - By using a technique called "skimming", they can get your ATM card information. Skimming is when they attach a data storage device, (which anyone can buy practically anywhere), to an ATM machine. When you swipe your card, they have your information.

Places of Business - A Privacy Act Notice must be given to you if any employer requests your Social Security Number, (SSN). Never give your SSN to an employer until you've been officially given a job.

Internet - "Phishing" online is very popular. Thefts happen when people pretend to be a legitimate company requesting your contact or credit card information. Never send them a check!

Records - "Dumpster diving", sifting through trash is another way thieves can get your information. Either a company's trash or your trash. More than one quarter of ID thefts are from people you know or are related to.

Schools & Colleges - SSNs are used for just about everything in colleges. Students and faculty become victims when SSNs are readily available. Left unattended, computer systems make it easy for hacking into.

How ID Thieves Can Get To You

SSN - The gateway to your identity, financially and personally, is your Social Security number. A thief can use your number to obtain a loan or even credit cards in your name. Getting a new Social Security number will not end your problems. The credit bureaus can use negative information from your old Social Security number in your credit report.

Signs of ID Theft

1. Statements and bills arrive late or not at all.
2. Creditors or collection agencies start contacting you.
3. You receive a credit card you did not apply for.
4. You get a letter of denial of credit you did not apply for.
5. You notice some of your mail is missing.
6. You receive bills from companies you never heard of.
7. Your arrested for a crime you did not commit.
8. Your no longer receiving bank statements, credit card statements or utility bills.

What You Can Do to Reduce Your Chances of Being A Victim

1. Do Not carry your Social Security card around with you.
2. Do not leave mail for your postman. The United States Postal Service (USPS), recommends you deposit mail in USPS collection boxes.
3. Invest in a shredder! Shred unwanted documents that contain personal information.
4. Balance your checkbook every month, better yet, if you have internet access, check your transactions online every day.
5. Be STINGY with giving out any personal information.
6. Do not have your SSN or phone number printed on your checks.
7. Never, ever give out personal information over the phone.
8. Use your own computer when doing business online. Public computers are less secure.
9. Don't open email from strangers.
10. Keep your purse/wallet in your bedroom when guests or workmen are around. Hide It!

If you do become a victim, file a police report and get a copy of it. File a complaint with the FTC. Close your accounts.

Why do people cheat? There are a lot of reasons. But I think it's mostly because they are unhappy. It might not be with you, but it might be with their job, their expectations of life, or maybe even the car they drive. It doesn't take much for a person to cheat. It does take two though.
